Cyber Criminals: Who’s Behind the Mask

Have you ever been the victim of a cyber attack and lost precious data? Data loss can hurt your business, potentially shutting it down, and bruise your ego as well. The temptation is to take the attack personally; you feel violated, and to make matters worse, you have no idea who is the slimeball responsible.

Cyber criminals are pros at hiding their identity while stealing yours. In the world wide wild web they are clearly the black-hat-wearing bad guys, which would make your MSP provider the sheriff in town, and we here at Corporate Technology Group want to serve and protect you. As a service to you and the wild wild web, let us now tack up wanted posters and show you the ugly mugs of those who did you dirty.

As the name "cyber criminal" implies, they are law breakers and even believe they are above the law and their actions are justified. These perpetrators have technical skills and get a kick from "one upping" and manipulating others. The motivations behind their crimes are diverse. Some enjoy creating chaos and disorder, while others might do it for the thrills created by the risk. Other motivations include: political and religious allegiances, emotional and relational reasons, and sexual impulses.

Cyber criminals usually work alone and have the appearance of normal citizens, the majority of their crimes would be considered small in scale. This does not mean that large groups of hackers huddled together in dark warehouses do not exist, they are just not the norm. Cyber criminals are hard to profile, primarily because the field attracts a variety of personalities. In fact, within the hacker community a class system is in place to distinguish a criminal by expertise and intentions.

  • Toolkit Newbies. Technical amateurs who generally download illegally from the internet.
  • Coders. Write code exclusively for the purpose of damaging other systems. They are covert and primarily use spyware and Trojans.
  • Cyber Punks. Program writers able to disable and deface websites. They are responsible for spamming and phishing schemes that cause identity theft. They also tend to be boastful of their accomplishments.
  • Old-guard hackers. Treat hacking like a sport or mental exercise. They are highly skilled and do not break the law, because technically making a virus is not illegal.
  • Hacktivist. This group can cause big damage and is gaining in popularity. They are socially or politically motivated and receive funding from other like-minded outside organizations.

Catching a cyber criminal is hard due to the complexity of computer networks, the crimetrail oftens ends at a computer. In fact, only five percent of of cyber criminals are caught and brought to justice. This means the odds of them getting away with the crime are 95%, which only strengthens their resolve.

Cyber criminals may be hard to catch, but you can take steps to make it hard for them to succeed. Keeping your antivirus software up-to-date and educating every person who uses your network to know what email phishing scams and scareware look like is half the battle. Having a sheriff on your side watching your back is the best defense from the dark underbelly of the internet. At Corporate Technology Group we are tooled and trained to be your sheriff, we want to serve and protect you. We can identify and fix vulnerabilities in your firewall, manage your antivirus software, and provide you with the latest defensive techniques. Give us a call at (817) 557-4091 and let us be your sheriff.
